There is a saying that the amount of alcohol in a glass of beer is the same as the amount of
alcohol in a glass of wine or a "shot" of "distilled spirits" (whiskey, tequila, etc.)
Assume that the "average" glass of beer holds 12 ounces, and since beer is between 8 and 12
percent alcohol, then there is between 1 and 1.5 ounces of alcohol in that glass of beer.
(0.96 to 1.44 ounces to be precise -- different brands have different amounts of alcohol,
and certain states legislate the strength of beer, so that 12 ounces of Budweiser in
Mississippi contain less alcohol than 12 ounces of Budweiser in New York...)
80 proof whiskey is only 40 percent alcohol, and 100 proof alcohol is only 50 percent alcohol
so a 2 ounce shot of 100 proof = 1 ounce of alcohol, and 2.5 ounces of 80 proof = 1 ounce
of alcohol.
So depending on the beer you are drinking, and the type of alcohol you are doing shots of,
In general, I'd say you want a 2 ounce shot to match each beer
