I have been searching for information on this type of glass -- ones with designs or items imbedded in the base, but have been unable to find much information. The most common item to imbed in the base is called "millefiore" (I think it is Italian for "a thousand flowers") The other common "item" in the bottom of a glass is an image that you can only see when it is held up to the light (most often the face of a woman, or more risque ones have a nude figure) -- I cannot remember the term for this process. It is sometimes used on lanterns -- when the light is off it looks like the sides are just "plain" but when the lamp is lit you can see a picture

This may help in your search

I have a similar glass with a dog painted in the base

Mark: I came across this very unique shot glass recently that I need help in identifying. It stands 2.75" high and is 2" in diameter. It is made of clear glass that is very thick. When you look into the bottom of the shot glass there is a floral design with gold leaf. It is as though you are looking into a kaleidoscope when you are looking into the bottom of the glass and turning it. The outside of the glass has 12 flat sides. When you turn the shot glass over, you see gold leaf painted in a circular fashion indented into the bottom of the glass that measures 1" across. There is a piece of clear glass that fits over the gold leaf. I will send a picture to you when you contact me. Sharon
