The quick answer is that the originals have writing (the patent number) molded into the rim, while the reproductions do not have writing. I know that I had a good reference on these, but moved recently and cannot find anything :(

The original manufcturer was McKee -- I have found some links in the past by searching for
mckee +"bottoms up"
in the various search engines
